NOTICE OF POSITION OPENING

TITLE:                                  Computing Coordinator for the Languages and
Literatures (Full-time)
DEPARTMENT:                     Information Technology Services
DATE OPEN:                      Immediately

Carleton College invites individuals with a strong background in the
Languages and Literatures, excellent computing skills, a keen desire to
enhance teaching through the application of information technologies, and
an enthusiasm for working with people, to apply for the full time position
of Computing Coordinator for the Languages and Literatures. The successful
candidate will join the Computing Coordinators for the Natural Sciences;
Social Sciences and Humanities; and Arts, Performance and Recreation in
practicing Carleton's widely emulated model of faculty technology support.
Individuals who have completed significant graduate work in a language or
literature program are particularly invited to apply.  This position
supports the departments of Asian Languages and Literatures, Classics,
College Writing Program, English, German and Russian, The Language Center,
Romance Languages and Literatures, and Women's Studies.

OVERVIEW: Carleton has just completed construction of a $16 million
Language and Dining Center that houses departments of language instruction,
The Language Center (TLC) and 11 teaching spaces.  The design of this
facility was informed by a strong history of curricular computing
exploration in the Languages and an excellent working relationship between
The Language Center and Information Technology Services.  The successful
candidate will collaborate with faculty and academic staff to facilitate
teaching and research, and explore new and innovative ways of enhancing
scholarly endeavors through information technologies; provide assistance -
technology research and exploration, consultation, troubleshooting,
training - as needed; and work in assessing and implementing curricular
uses of IT.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintain familiarity with teaching and research practices
and needs, and provide appropriate information technology support,
consultation and training. Actively pursue knowledge of information
technology applications in the Languages and Literatures, and work with
faculty to explore and implement new uses of computers and networks in
their teaching and research. Coordinate with other staff to ensure
successful delivery of curricular applications in the student computing and
residential network environments; provide application training to classes
of students as appropriate. Coordinate the receipt, testing, configuration,
and delivery of computers and software; coordinate with hardware
maintenance staff to effect equipment repairs. Support students working on
comprehensive exercises and other complex curricular endeavors. Supervise
student staff to assist in many of the above activities.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or higher. The degree, or substantial
coursework, should be in an appropriate field. A minimum of two years
post?college experience in end?user technology consulting and training.
Demonstrated ongoing and active interest in one or more areas within the
Languages and Literatures. Experience with, and understanding of, the
processes of teaching and research in a relevant field. Keen interest in
the enhancement of the curriculum through information technologies. Solid
experience and understanding of at least one major microcomputer
environment and of the technical issues that result from working with
multiple writing systems. Knowledge and experience with one or more LAN
technologies (e.g., NetWare) and the services of the TCP/IP Internet.
Substantial experience with technologies employed in the teaching and
learning languages - these may include video editing, HTML and/or
multimedia authoring tools. Excellent oral and written communication
skills. Strong service orientation. Willingness and ability to consistently
acquire new knowledge and skills. Ability to work well with faculty,
students and staff. Experience setting up and troubleshooting microcomputer
software and hardware. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.

DESIRABLE QUALITIES: Advanced degree. Teaching experience in the Languages
and Literatures. Experience enhancing a curriculum through computing
technologies. Experience supervising/training student, part-time employees.
