At about 11am I looked out from my office window here at VINS and saw
a medium-sized songbird fluttering in a tree near the feeders. I
noticed a distinctly red tail and watched it fly over next to a
building and sit on the ground. Kent McFarland and I went outside to
get a better look and discovered that it was a Hermit Thrush. It was
incredibly fluffed out and eating what few berries it could find, but
it was sluggish and the chances of its survival in this cold seem
slim. While some might not agree with our course of action, we
decided to capture it and keep it in captivity (at our wildlife rehab
facilities) for a couple days until it warms up a bit. We did inspect
it for fat levels and injury, and it seems to be a healthy bird
except for having bad judgement!
