Birding UT ID MT WY CO June 12- 18th 2017

Whirlwind trip to the West. College tour and some birding.

Started in Park City Utah, worked our way into the SW of Idaho, up to
Missoula MT, over to Bozeman, down to Cody Wy, then thru WY to a Prairie
Preserve in CO. Flew out of Denver. Lots of miles, several historic sites,
NWR's, and a Prairie Preserve in NE CO. 86 species, 2 firsts.

Benton NWF: prairie with potholes of water and canals. Water in a dry
land.

My faves were the abundant (50' apart) singing/ territorial Yellow-headed
Blackbirds.

Waterfowl: Cinnamon and BW Teal, Gadwalls, Am. Widgeon, Shovelers, Pintail,
Breeding Ruddy Ducks (bluebills !), Eared Grebe nesting, Am Avocets, Black-n
Stilts, Short-eared Owls !! (evening tour and again in the early am),
Wilson's Phalaropes, Marsh Wrens, nesting Swainson's Hawk, Marbled Godwit,
Long-billed Curlew, Black-cr. Nightherons, Eastern and Western Kingbirds.
Vesper Sparrows and my first Chestnut-collared Longspur.

Driving is a special..we saw so much great western open land ! Mountains in
the distance. Rain and snow in Idaho. Rivers were maxed with water.

Kestrels, many, many Western Meadowlarks, tons of Horned Larks everywhere.
This is ranching country. White-faced Ibis's, Violet-green swallows, many
Cliff Swallows. CA Gulls, Mtn. Bluebirds, Swainson's Hawks, Western
Tanagers, Rock Wrens, Bullock's Orioles, Brewer's, Grasshopper, and Lark
Sparrows, Green-t. Towhee, Broad-t. Hummer, Co. Nighthawks, Loggerhead
Shrike, Lazuli bunting, lots of Lark Buntings and my first McCowan's
Longspur. 88 total.

What a change of scenery and birds.

Look forward to finding a Mountain Plover next time.

Happy trails... glad there are still birds singing here.
