This is a reminder that at 7:00 PM on Monday January 11, 2016, Chris Rimmer, Executive Director of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE), is to speak on “Bicknell’s Thrush: Conserving a Bird of Two Worlds” in the Mayer Room of the Howe Library in Hanover, NH. This illustrated program is free and open to the public and has been arranged by the Mascoma Chapter of New Hampshire Audubon.

Bicknell’s Thrush is one of North America’s most rare and vulnerable songbirds. Nesting in mountaintop forests of northern New England and New York, and wintering primarily on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, Bicknell’s Thrush faces numerous threats to its long-term survival. On the breeding grounds, these include acid precipitation, ski area development, communications tower construction, wind power development, mercury contamination, and climate change. The species’ limited winter habitats are under siege from deforestation, caused by human population pressures. Since 1992, Chris Rimmer has spearheaded work to conserve the species and these habitats on which it depends.
He’ll discuss this fascinating and rare songbird, VCE’s efforts to study it in New England and the Caribbean, and how Bicknell’s Thrush represents a vital conservation link across the hemisphere.

Many UVB readers will know of Chris Rimmer as one of the most active birders of the Upper Valley. This program will provide an opportunity to learn about his major discoveries promoting the conservation of a rare and unusual species.
