I posted a few days ago.. maybe a week, asking about a bird I was hearing
while walking with my dogs on the Parcel 5 .morton trail loop.. It sounds
something like "sweet sweet sweet (then buzzy, rising zreee) . Ideas have
been black throated blue warbler, which makes some sense since there do seem
to be a LOT of those in those woods.. but the first notes just aren't buzzy
or raspy like the black throated blue. Only the last note is buzzy (the
zreee). I even thought maybe it was a pine siskin, though now I'm not sure
why I thought that might be it. The other idea was a northern parula, but it
doesn't have the rising zzzz that falls "over the top" that I have heard in
recordings.
I really feel silly saying this, but what it most sounds like.. most
consistently, is the .. gulp.. cerulean warbler. I KNOW that they aren't
supposed to be around here... or much anywhere.. but also read that they
don't seem to stick to one area.. and sort of sounds like the kind of area
that they might like to be in. And birds are moving farther and farther
north.. so since I don't know enough to say it DEFINITELY could NOT be,
maybe it's important to mention it anyway.
I think there may be more than one singing that particular song. Anyway,
the recordings of the Cerulean warbler are pretty much what the bird I am
hearing sounds like.. whoever it is!
