Continuing a three year tradition, a birding walk will be held as part
of the annual Hanover-Norwich Christmas Bird Count on this coming
Tuesday January 1, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:30 AM. Participants will meet
at 9:00 AM at Dan and Whit's General Store on Main Street in Norwich
and walk from there. Leader Chris Rimmer plans to follow a loop
starting on Beaver Meadow Road, turning onto Hopson Road, up through
Hillside Cemetery, cutting through to Pine Tree Road, back to Hopson,
and then returning to Dan and Whit's. Total distance will be about one
mile, nearly all of it on paved road. The pace will be leisurely, with
an emphasis on ensuring that everyone sees the birds encountered.
Children are welcome, but if under 18 years of age should be
accompanied by an adult. This bird walk is free and open to the public.
Recent birds of interest in the vicinity of this route include
Carolina Wren and flocks of Common Redpolls, the latter having come
down from the arctic this winter. Although no severe weather is in the
forecast for New Year's Day, participants should be prepared for cold
and potentially damp conditions, with sturdy and warm footwear (snow
boots recommended). Please bring binoculars if possible. The walk will
take place rain or shine, unless conditions of heavy snow or rain
persist. If in doubt, call Chris anytime after 8:00 AM at 802-922-8495.
