Yesterday's bird banding was an unqualified success, as both weather and
birds cooperated. At least 25 people attended, including a good number of
youthful enthusiasts, all of whom were able to release at least one
songbird after banding. It's amazing to see kids' (and adults') eyes widen
at an up-close-and-personal encounter with a bird in the hand.

We netted 15 birds, which included a nice collection of expected residents
and a couple of unexpected migrants:

Black-capped Chickadee - 1
House Wren - 1
"Traill's" Flycatcher - 2 (not possible to positively identify in hand,
though theses were almost certainly Willows)
Common Yellowthroat - 2 females
Canada Warbler - 2 stunning males
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1 (very nice surprise)
Song Sparrow - 4
American Goldfinch - 2 (male and female captured simultaneously)

Thanks to Jason Hill for help with the banding, Doug Hardy for yeoman's
work as data recorder, and everyone who came and contributed to a memorable
morning.
