Today’s Windsor County 2015 Birding Quest trip together with subsequent birding, all in the town of Norwich, VT, found more than 55 species. Full results are eventually to be on eBird, but some highlights can be mentioned here. Sites visited included the Ledyard Bridge area, Pompy (3 separate times), Kendall Station Road, Campbell Flats, and the Stevens Road area. More than 20 birders were present at times, but much birding was done by smaller groups.

Birds of note included Green-winged Teal (2 at Pompy), Wild Turkey flocks in 3 locations, and a number of raptors, many of which were seen at Campbell Flats over about an hour starting about 10:30. Sighted then were 10 Turkey Vultures, an Osprey, a Northern Harrier, 23 Broad-winged Hawks, a Red-shouldered Hawk (seen and calling), and 4 Red-tailed Hawks. A Pied-billed Grebe was in the Connecticut River off Kendall Station Road along with one of the several Double-crested Cormorants found today. The only Green Heron was at Pompy. Shorebirds at Pompy today included about 20 Killdeer and 2 Greater Yellowlegs. A Ruby-throated Hummingbird was seen at Campbell Flats. Eastern Phoebes were noticeably numerous and widespread. At least 5 species of warblers were seen including Tennessee, Magnolia, Yellow-rumped, Blackpoll, and American Redstart. One Scarlet Tanager was found. A Lincoln’s Sparrow provided an excellent viewing opportunity along Old Bridge Road.

Special thanks go to coleaders Sara Eisenhower, Ed Hack, and Chris Rimmer and to field compiler Cathy Hybels.
