Under foggy and cool conditions this morning, six of us on a Meriden Bird Club field trip birded in the Cornish (NH) Recreation and Education Area which is bounded on the north by Townhouse Road and on the west by Parsonage Road. This location is partly immediately to the south of the Cornish school, town hall, and fair grounds. This scenic Recreation and Education Area will interest birders and is open to the public year round. Within the area are extended wetlands with a wildlife viewing platform and blind, open fields, and woodlands, all accessible by a network of trails including a wide boardwalk and bridge which pass through one wetland section.

Early this morning, many birds were tending to stay under cover, possibly because of a Merlin which we saw repeatedly perched or flying, despite efforts for some minutes by a band of Blue Jays unsuccessfully attempting to drive that falcon away. Others among the 18 bird species we found were 3 Wild Turkeys, a foraging Belted Kingfisher, 2 Northern Flickers, a Pileated Woodpecker, several Eastern Phoebes, a Red-eyed Vireo, several American Robins, several Cedar Waxwings, a Common Yellowthroat, and numerous American Goldfinches.
