A kingfisher in a low branch waiting for passing fish, a great blue heron roosting high above in a hemlock, a few brown ducks swimming lazily in the late afternoon sun, and along comes a solitary loon, the first seen at this lake in two years. He rolls over on his side, stretches his legs out, grooming his feathers, belly shining pure white in the sun. He dives only once, slowly swims into a grassy inlet, and is gone.
Why only one loon seen in this peaceful and forested lake in several years remains a mystery.

Don
