Several of us going to the ASNH Mascoma Chapter bird walk along River
Road in Lyme on Saturday July 30, 2011, are to carpool from the
commuter parking lot on River Road in Norwich by Ledyard Bridge. If
you'd like to join in that carpool, please be ready to leave that
parking lot by 6:30 AM. We'll aim to return to that lot about 9:30 AM.
The bird walk itself, from 7:00 to 9:00 AM on Saturday July 30, 2011,
along River Road in Lyme, NH, will cover as much as two miles on foot
looking for breeding birds and their young and possible early fall
migrants along the Connecticut River. George Clark is to lead this
walk which is free and open to the public. Children accompanied by an
adult are welcome. Bring binoculars and scopes if available. In the
case of heavy, steady rain or thundershowers, this walk will be
canceled.
Road instructions:
From Hanover, NH, take Route 10 north to the village of Lyme and
there turn left onto East Thetford Road. Continue west until just
before the bridge that crosses the Connecticut River. There, turn
right onto River Road, continuing northward over a paved section of
road onto an unpaved section. Eventually, farther north, the road is
again paved, and that location, where the road changes from unpaved to
paved, is the 7 AM starting point for this walk. Park vehicles along
the river (west) side of the unpaved road in the wooded section just
to the south of the pavement.
If coming from VT Exit 14 off I-91 in Thetford, turn east on Route 113
and continue through the village of East Thetford and across the
bridge over the Connecticut River. Then take an immediate left turn
northward onto River Road and continue as described above. [Vermont
Route 5 is an alternate route if coming from Norwich to East Thetford.]
[Please note that River Road in Lyme is presently not a through road
for motor vehicles due to erosion by the river this spring. The
section of River Road closed to motor vehicles is south of its
intersection with North Thetford Road. Also, River Road in the Town of
Hanover has also been closed this summer for bridge rebuilding.]
