What better way to end a month-long bird walk series than with the exhilarating thrill of a life bird sighting! That's how the 2016 "Feathered Fridays" series conclude today. The object of our excitement was a golded-winged warbler seen and/or heard by all fifteen of the walk's participants,
The golden-winged was first reported on Wednesday, May 25 by VT Center for Ecostudies Executive Director Chris Rimmer. It was seen subsequently on Thursday, the 26th by several birders. As we gathered Friday morning for the "Feathered Fridays" walk, the bird's continued presence was confirmed by Jeff MacQueen who provided location.
The golden-winged was audibly co-operative but visually elusive. It's distinctive, buzzy, three-note call was heard readily, but poor lighting made it difficult to pinpoint visually. Its movement back and forth across the river did not make locating it any easier. Nonetheless, views, albeit fleeting, were made by all of the party.
Lost in the shuffle was the sighting of an olive-sided flycatcher. For most observers, it was another "life bird." Kyle Jones attested to its presence, it was in the same vicinity of the golden-winged, and it cleared up a mystery about a large flycatcher of the eastern kingbird shape. But its coloration, tail patterning and shape were different.
In the end, 42 species were observed and there was general agreement it was "a good day out."
