Hi Folks!
Here is another job posting—this one shared by Michael Otte ’13. This is with a biotech company in San Francisco (located in Google’s main office in San Fran)

There are few positions which are especially suited for folks with a biology, computer science, math/statistics, quantitative social sciences degree, or a combination (you don’t need to have experience with all!).

You can certainly be in touch with him directly: Info below!
Warmly,
Your HPP team

Subject: Potentially Interesting/Helpful Post-grad Job

Hi Sarah,

I am a Dartmouth College ‘13 that you helped a while back! I’m finally taking my first official crack at applying to medical school four years out, so I recently signed up for the incredible pre-health listserv. Thank you for the wonderful resource.

I noticed that there were many post-grad job listings being sent out so I thought I would contribute a unique opportunity.

I am a D’13 and a special advisor to a biotech company called freenome. Freenome is a research and development company in South San Francisco that is focused on early cancer detection through molecular markers (including cell-free DNA) in the blood.

Recommended positions for post-grads:
Executive Assistant - https://hire.withgoogle.com/public/jobs/freenomecom/view/P_AAAAAACAAADEomkLMHoCzW<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhire.withgoogle.com%2Fpublic%2Fjobs%2Ffreenomecom%2Fview%2FP_AAAAAACAAADEomkLMHoCzW&data=02%7C01%7CSarah.L.Berger%40dartmouth.edu%7C44da9fa9bea049c7cf0b08d541b8bdd0%7C995b093648d640e5a31ebf689ec9446f%7C0%7C0%7C636487184070190732&sdata=OsEvnaI%2FypzYNp7Z7vLXvn6a%2FVB9f7YVrB9l9OTY23c%3D&reserved=0>
Software Engineer - https://hire.withgoogle.com/public/jobs/freenomecom/view/P_AAAAAACAAADIbp7iXX03M9<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhire.withgoogle.com%2Fpublic%2Fjobs%2Ffreenomecom%2Fview%2FP_AAAAAACAAADIbp7iXX03M9&data=02%7C01%7CSarah.L.Berger%40dartmouth.edu%7C44da9fa9bea049c7cf0b08d541b8bdd0%7C995b093648d640e5a31ebf689ec9446f%7C0%7C0%7C636487184070190732&sdata=JZnHOc%2FXuQPvCK96kOKKdfO1RvSm%2BXe9K%2BsOCePEoqE%3D&reserved=0>
- software engineering background required

You will have the opportunity to learn a lot about cancer screening and an implmentation of conceptual research to a cutting-edge industry screening test. There are highly qualified people at the company and many opportunities to learn from experts in an interdisciplinary team.

These positions would be great full-time opportunities for pre-med students with a biology, computer science, math/statistics, quantitative social sciences degree, or a combination. A successful candidate does not need to know the depth of genomics or computational biology being used in the company - though it helps. For example, I started out with a role as a software engineer and biology researcher with no rigorous background in genomics nor computational biology. I learned and read all the papers related to the company’s research, as well as learning with the company, and have been successful as a result (promoted to CTO).

Freenome is a wonderful company that collaborates with many academic research institutions and industry leaders, including Stanford, UCSD, the Broad Institute, and Google.

In addition to paying salaries above market, freenome’s main office is in Google’s SSF office, meaning Google perks to freenome employees!

If you have questions, or something I can help with, please feel free to reach out.

Best,
Michael Otte D’13
