Hello all!

It was great to see many folks at last week's "Research: Finding, Funding, & Doing" workshop! Whether you were able to make it or not, we wanted to share the PPT slides and share a few reminders and resources here! You'll see in the slides that we talk about structured research programs that require an application and (what the majority of Dartmouth students do) "build your own opportunity" options by reaching out to folks doing research within and outside of Dartmouth. The PPT has several resources and TIPS!

Below we've highlighted many structured, summer research programs whose application due dates are happening between NOW and the next few weeks. Many of these programs are funded. See also below for some resources to look up more programs than what we've listed. NOTE! For each opportunity make sure to check both eligibility and start dates. Our later Spring terms sometimes prevent participation!

Additionally, HPP will discuss more about what people do during off-term at our Winter Community Dinner next Thursday, January 25th at 6:30 PM. If you're interested in attending, make sure to RSVP HERE<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfA3ggU2zlrPvGxccaAhQkYzWV_CcWLpKjziaECx2WtSU4ajQ/viewform?usp=pp_url>.

Best wishes!
Sarah, Nicole, and Rae

  1. HPP has created a great resource for you: The HPP Opportunity Directory.<https://www.dartmouth.edu/prehealth/preparation/hpp_opps_directory.html> Note the multiple tab categories at the top of the spreadsheet. There are many different types of programs from research to public health. The HPP Directory is large, but it's impossible to capture everything, so be sure to check out the below resources as well!
  2. HPP has created a Dartmouth Programs & Opportunities<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T_INzfLPKiuaUGmawgSAfZb4pxKoUP9EODZcqjqKquY/edit#heading=h.rxr1hr6h3ted> resource that contains information about the many departments, programs, offices, clubs, and organizations within the Dartmouth community where students can engage in research/scholarship, services, teaching, and finding sources of funding. While this resource is fairly comprehensive, there are still many Dartmouth opportunities out there that we may have missed, so know that this is an evolving resource.
  3. The AAMC website. While there may be some redundancy between the HPP Opportunity Directory and AAMC, again, we're not able to capture everything - so make sure to check out the below links!

  *   Research opportunities<https://www.aamc.org/professional-development/affinity-groups/great/summer-undergrad-research-programs>
  * Enrichment and pipeline opportunities<https://services.aamc.org/summerprograms/> - Includes some unique summer Academic and MCAT prep programs, these are often multiple summer programs that are especially good to check out for current freshmen and sophomores.

  1. You can also check out the National Science Foundation<https://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/> for ideas. Many opportunities are also available at the National Institute of Health (NIH) here<https://www.training.nih.gov/programs/sip> and others here<https://www.training.nih.gov/other_summer_programs_at_the_nih>!
  2. Some specific programs focus on providing opportunities for students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine. URiM includes (but is not limited to) students who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native, Hispanic/Latino, and/or are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.
  3. There are also MANY other great ideas for summer of off-term research, service, or clinical experience. The majority of you will "build your own" experience for some or all of your off-terms. Along with HPP, offices like the Center for Social Impact, The Dickey Center, the Rocky Center, and the Center for Professional Development (CPD) are great resources for learning more.

A SAMPLE OF A FEW SUMMER PROGRAMS - there are many more!

  1. SHPEP: SUMMER HEALTH PROFESSIONS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM<http://www.shpep.org/>

SHPEP is a free 6-week summer program for first-year or sophomore students, focused on enhancing access to resources for students interested in health professions. Its goal is to strengthen the academic and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for success in their future applications. URiM includes (but is not limited to) students who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native, Hispanic/Latino, and are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.
