* DCAL's Learning Community for Future Faculty - inquiry-driven learning
*

In order to cultivate a community focused on teaching and learning
amongst graduate students and postdocs, DCAL has established a Learning
Community for Future Faculty (LCFF). The focus of this group is to share
the rewards and challenges of college teaching, while digging a bit
deeper into best practices and techniques for teaching. In January’s
LCFF, we will start with an overview of different means of
inquiry-driven learning and how much of a hurdle each one is to begin to
work with, then work on making a basic lab or assignments participants
bring more inquiry based.

* Presenting Your Research *

How to Present Your Research
Friday, Jan. 13 @ 12 noon
1st Floor Fahey
http://libcal.dartmouth.edu/calendar/gradstudies/?cid=221&t=d&d=0000-00-00&cal%5B%5D=221

Presenting your research at conferences and to your department can be
stressful. F. Jon Kull, Dean of Graduate and Advanced Studies will
provide tips on how to craft a clear research presentation that will
hold your audiences’ interest.

* Ethics Facilitator Training *

Ethics Facilitator Training

The Graduate and Advanced Studies in collaboration with the Ethics
Institute at Dartmouth developed an institution-wide program of training
in the basics of professional ethics for first year graduate students.
The Graduate Ethics Program has three components: an opening session
during orientation, four small group discussions on focal topics to be
taken fall term of the first year of graduate school, and an online
ethics survey.

For the second phase of the Ethics program, Aine Donovan, Executive
Director of the Ethics Institute at Dartmouth College offers a four-part
ethics training session focusing on key ethical issues to train future
Ethics Facilitators.

Graduate students, postdocs, administrators, and faculty who attend the
sessions will gain skills in case style teaching methods and develop a
framework for thinking about ethical issues that occur in research.
Those who attend the training sessions will then facilitate four ethics
workshops for a small group of first year students in the fall of 2017.
Trainers will receive $50 per facilitated session.

If you are interested in the Training for Trainers please email Kerry
Landers a brief statement of interest in teaching ethics and a copy of
your cv/resume by Jan 16. Also, please sign-up on libcal at http://libcal.dartmouth.edu/event/2897471

Trainers are expected to attend all the workshops listed below for the
2017 winter term.

The facilitator training sessions are on the following dates in the
Ethics Institute conference room:

Diversity and Professionalism, Tuesday, February 7, 2-4 pm

Mentoring, Tuesday, February 14, 2-4 pm

Authorship/Peer Review, Tuesday, February 21, 2-4 pm

Data Collection, Tuesday, February 28, 2-4 pm

* Promote Your Research! *

The School of Graduate and Advanced Studies outreach office is looking
for some lab microscopy videos to promote research at Dartmouth.

If your lab has a visually appealing, good quality video please email
Amanda Skinner for more information on how to reach a wider audience. We
already have several labs who have submitted, and narrated, their videos
and hope to have as many labs represented as possible when we launch the
series.

If you are not in a lab and would still like your research highlighted
in a short video, you can still be part of the project. Email Amanda for
more information.

* A Funding Database for the Dartmouth Community *

A great source of funding opportunities is the PIVOT database, which is
available to members of the Dartmouth community. It includes current
funding opportunities worldwide, from a wide variety of sources such as
government agencies, private foundations, research institutions, and
educational institutions such as museums. Opportunities listed in PIVOT
range from small travel grants to large multi-year research projects to "mini
grants" for community outreach. Almost any subject area or type of
project has some funding opportunity in PIVOT! PIVOT is funded by the
Office of Sponsored Projects.

How to use it:
1. Anyone accessing PIVOT from the Dartmouth network can use the search
functions to find funding opportunities. When you select Advanced
Search, you will see pull down menus for limiting your search, including
one for "Citizenship or Residency", so that is one approach to limiting
the funding opportunities you see. You can also just browse your
results from a subject search and look for any limitations, such as "citizenship
or residency".
2. You can set up a personal account and request automatic updates on
funding opportunities of interest to you to be sent via email. First see
if you have a profile - most Dartmouth people already do. You can edit
that profile once you claim it.

For a short workshop or individual consultation, just ask! Barbara
