* Software Carpentry 2-day workshop *

Time: 9:00am - 4:30pm
Location: Carson Instructional Center (Carson 61), Baker-Berry Library
 
Software Carpentry (More details and syllabus: https://nesclic.github.io/2017-12-04-dartmouth/)
aims to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less
pain by teaching them basic research computing skills. This hands-on
workshop will cover basic concepts and tools, including program design,
version control, data management, and task automation. Participants will
be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to
their own research problems.

Practices for Scientific Computing".
 
Who: The course is aimed at graduate students and other researchers. You
don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be
presented at the workshop.
 
Food: lunches and coffee breaks are included, courtesy of QBS, the
Library, and Research Computing
 
REGISTRATION: THIS IS A 2-DAY WORKSHOP, PLEASE PLAN ON ATTENDING BOTH
DAYS. WE REQUEST SINGLE REGISTRATION FOR THE 2-DAY SWC WORKSHOP ON THIS
PAGE. YOU DO NOT NEED TO REGISTER FOR TUESDAY SEPARATELY.

REQUIREMENTS: PARTICIPANTS MUST BRING A LAPTOP WITH A MAC, LINUX, OR
WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM (NOT A TABLET, CHROMEBOOK, ETC.) THAT THEY HAVE
ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILEGES ON. THEY SHOULD HAVE A FEW SPECIFIC SOFTWARE
PACKAGES INSTALLED (LISTED BELOW). THEY ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO ABIDE BY
SOFTWARE CARPENTRY'S CODE OF CONDUCT.
Materials will be provided in advance of the workshop and large-print
handouts are available if needed by notifying the organizers in advance.
If we can help making learning easier for you (e.g. sign-language
interpreters, lactation facilities) please get in touch (using contact
details below) and we will attempt to provide them.

The deadline to apply for a GSC conference travel grant for the winter

* TA Orientation Dec 4&5 *

TA Orientation Dec 4&5
Whether you're about to TA for the first time or will be TAing again,
this is an opportunity to learn from experienced TAs about a variety of
topics, such as the first day of class, connecting with students, time
management, resources at Dartmouth, inclusive classrooms, lesson design,
grading, and tricky situations. You will also have the opportunity to do
some practice teaching. 
The Orientation will be on two days:
Monday Dec. 4 (9am-4pm, including lunch) and Tuesday Dec 5 (10am-1pm,
including lunch). 
An additional session for international TAs will be on
Tuesday Dec 5, 1:30-3pm.

While registration will be open until orientation, please register early
so we can recruit experienced TAs best suited to work with those who
plan to attend and finalize the program based on your needs.

Are you a graduate student or postdoc in the sciences and working on a
writing project such as a dissertation or manuscript? Could you use
support and protected time to make progress with your writing?
 
On Tuesday, December 12 and Wednesday, December 13, Kresge Physical
Sciences Library will host a writer’s retreat for graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows in the sciences. During this two-day retreat, you’ll
have:
dedicated time to work on your writing project
a presentation by Dr. Sarah B. Smith, lecturer in the department of
Environmental Studies and the Institute for Writing and Rhetoric
a one-on-one consultation about your writing
time to engage with a peer writing community
free lunch and snacks
 
When? Tuesday, December 12 and Wednesday, December 13; 9 am – 5pm
Where? Kresge Physical Sciences Library (3rd floor Fairchild)
