SOUP FOR THOUGHT: The Student Sexual Assault Petition Project: Past Work and Next Steps

Dartmouth has a rate of sexual assault that is reportedly five times that of comparable universities. This fall, a group of students put together a petition to the administration, demanding a more coordinated and effective response to this epidemic. The members of the Tucker's United Campus Ministries group have organized this week's Soup for Thought presentation to offer their support for carrying these concerns forward. In addition to its many other toxic aspects, sexual assault is a moral and spiritual issue. This event will explore the history of how the petition effort came together, and where we can take it in the future. Please join us to learn more about this critical challenge to our community.

This week's Soup for Thought will include perspectives from

Nell Pierce '13
Stella Safari '13

Join us at noon this Thursday in the Tucker living room for free food and great discussion.
Collis soup and bread will be served.
"Wait, what IS Soup for Thought?" you may be wondering. Soup for Thought is a Tucker initiative that provides an opportunity for students to speak out about "what matters to us and why" in a forum that allows for meaningful, reflective, real dialogue. Past discussions have included feminism and sexual assault, racism and prejudice, the Palestinian- Israeli conflict, and masculinity at Dartmouth.

Need something to do over the summer?

Join Shining Hope for Communities -- an NGO working to support girls’ education and community development in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya -- in their Summer Institute program. The Summer Institute brings undergraduate college students from the US to the Kibera School for Girls (KSG) -- the first free school for girls in Kibera – to collaborate with local youth in leading a three-week fun, educational “Summer Camp” for our students. Volunteers will work at KSG Monday-Friday, 7:30am-5pm. On weekends, participants will be able to explore Nairobi’s vibrant culture as well as travel outside of the city on scheduled outings.

We are looking for energetic, independent, passionate undergraduate students to participate in this year’s program. Our application process has now opened, and we will be accepting participants on a rolling basis.

The application for the program, and much more information, is available on our website here:http://shininghopeforcommunities.org/support/work-with-us/summer-institute/.
