Dartmouth Fellow Fall Internship at Close Concerns/San Francisco

Several years ago Dartmouth's Nathan Smith Society (NSS) members forged a connection with Close Concerns and established the Dartmouth Fellowship Program there. They are now recruiting for the fall term. See message below (and enclosure) from NSS alumna Ann Carracher 17 who is working there full-time now. Their application deadline for the fall term has now been extended to Friday, July 21.

-Nathan Smith Society Executive Committee

Close Concerns<https://www.closeconcerns.com/>, a San Francisco-based healthcare information company and public health think tank, is currently recruiting for the Dartmouth Fellow internship position for the 17F term. Our core mission is to make people smarter about diabetes and obesity - truly the greatest public health issues of our time - by providing comprehensive analysis of the basic science, pharmacotherapies, technology, and public policy surrounding these diseases in the form of a newsletter read by thousands of doctors and industry leaders. Associates at Close Concerns - all of whom are recently graduated from competitive colleges and bound for graduate and medical school at the end of their tenures here - spend their time traveling to over 50 scientific and medical conferences per year, both nationally and internationally, in order to keep up to date on the latest insights in diabetes and obesity research. As a Dartmouth Fellow you will assist with this work, gaining broad and deep exposure to multiple facets of the healthcare industry, interacting with world-renowned experts in diabetes and obesity, and potentially traveling to a conference!

Applications for the Dartmouth Fellow position are reviewed on a rolling basis - early applicants thus receive priority review; the final deadline has been extended to Friday, July 21.

To learn more about the position and how to apply, please see the attached job description. Please don’t hesitate to e-mail Ann Carracher ‘17 at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> with any questions.

Praise from Past Dartmouth Fellows:

Working at Close Concerns provided an inside look at aspects of the healthcare field that undergraduate classes at Dartmouth do not touch on. I acquired a holistic understanding of the economics, technological advancements, and newest drug developments in the fields of diabetes and obesity. I enjoyed interacting with key opinion leaders and traveling both nationally and internationally to attend conferences. Most of all, I appreciated the family atmosphere in the office and the newly installed walking treadmill desk. – Marissa Lynn (Dartmouth College ’13, Fulbright Scholar in South Korea)

My time at Close Concerns has been one of the most valuable experiences I have had in my undergraduate career. I had so many exciting opportunities to not only learn about, but also interact with many different players within medicine and public health. As a Dartmouth Fellow, you are given the chance to really make a difference in a company that has huge influence within the field – an opportunity difficult to come by as an undergraduate student. – Melissa An (Dartmouth College ’14; Close Concerns Full Time Associate 2014-2016)

My time as a Dartmouth Fellow has given me incredible insight into the challenges associated with treating chronic disease, and I now have a much better understanding of how the different parts of our healthcare system fit together. Working alongside an amazing team of remarkably intelligent and driven individuals, I learned a great deal about medicine and public health as well as the current efforts being made to improve the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans. In addition, I was given the freedom and autonomy to shape various projects, and I really valued the opportunity to contribute to the overall mission of Close Concerns in a meaningful way. Working as a Dartmouth Fellow is a very unique opportunity to grow both personally and professionally, and I feel very lucky to have been welcomed into the Close Concerns family for an amazing ten weeks. – Leda Espinoza (Dartmouth College ’16)

Working at Close Concerns has been an incredible experience and is very unique compared to working at other companies. You won’t be treated as “just the intern,” but instead feel valued as part of the team by writing pieces that get published under your name; attending conferences with highly esteemed medical, policy, and business experts; and helping to move the company forward — just to name a few things! Having known barely anything about diabetes and obesity when I started working, diving into the latest news and research about these fields gave me a lot of insights. Within a few weeks, I learned a lot more deeply than I ever would have reading articles for classes. The days are fast-paced with a lot of learning and managing multiple projects, but each day I felt inspired and driven by the talented team members around me who cared about putting out their best work. I would not have imagined spending my off-term anywhere else, and I highly encourage fellow Dartmouth students to apply! - Jennifer Zhao (Dartmouth College ’18)
