CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF BASIC

On May 1st, 1964 at 4:00 am, the BASIC computer language was first successfully run on two terminals simultaneously, marking the birth of time-sharing and BASIC at Dartmouth. Created by Math professors John Kemeny and Tom Kurtz, BASIC went on to become the most widely used computer language in the world.

Event Schedule for BASIC's 50th Birthday:

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30

THE PAST * 1:00 - 2:30 pm * Hood Auditorium
Debut screening of "The Birth of BASIC," a documentary created by Professor Dan Rockmore and filmmakers Bob Drake and Mike Murray. Followed by Q&A with the original founders of BASIC, including Tom Kurtz.

THE PRESENT * 3:00 - 4:15 pm * Top of the Hop
Interactive exhibition of innovative student projects in computing, featuring Hope Wilson '16, Olivia Evans '14, Elizabeth Lummus '14, Winnie Yoe '14, Kayla Gilbert '12, Jackson Berler '14,  Jessica Glago '08, Tim Tregubov '11, Gloria Li '16, Yibo Long, Michelle Khare '14, Gurkaran Singh '15, Tianyang Wang '15, Bingyue Wang '16, Jack Boffa, Junjie Guan, Nook Harquail '14, Rebecca Leong '15, Lauren Tran, Charlie Laud '14, Teagan Daly '13 and Shiyuan Jiang.

THE FUTURE * 4:30 - 6:00 pm * Moore Theater
Panel of expert futurologists to predict the next 50 years of computing and technology, featuring Brian David Johnson, futurist at Intel, Michael T. Jones, chief technology advocate at Google, and Daniela Rus, director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT. Followed by Q&A with the audience and a reception at the Hanover Inn.
