In light of recent campus events, we would like to reach out to all members of the Dartmouth community in order to address issues of inclusivity and discrimination that exist throughout our campus. To those marginalized groups that have faced persistent social inequalities made evident by this incident: we hear you and support you. We condemn discrimination and intolerance, and are committed to do all that we can to address and overcome injustice.

The first step in this process is acknowledging that as a male-dominated social space, Bones Gate is inherently complicit in these issues: as such, we are uniquely responsible for addressing these systemic injustices both within our community and beyond it. We strive to create a welcoming and safe environment for all Dartmouth community members, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.

In order to advance the mission of social justice for all at Dartmouth, we will host an open discussion, Overcoming Obstacles to Inclusivity, moderated by Sociology & Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies professor Janice McCabe, this Thursday, February 22nd at 8PM. Food will be provided. The purpose of this forum is to foster productive dialogue, to provide a space for your voice to be heard, and to cultivate ideas for improving our organization, campus and community.

We realize that there are clear problems with hosting a forum on inclusivity within a male-dominated space, and that some may not be comfortable coming. However, we hope that doing so will bring to light ideas that would otherwise not arise, set a precedent for action on the part of our organization, and help us create an inclusive and safe environment. Further, we feel it would be indicative of male entitlement and privilege to respond publicly without taking steps to make effective change through actions.

We will sponsor another forum in a gender-neutral space later this term. We also believe that, when it comes to fostering dialogue and addressing these issues, we should not limit or distance our participation on account of our privilege; instead we hope to leverage our influence for the benefit of those who have been disenfranchised on account of identity or background.

If you would like to send us your questions, advice, or concerns, please do so. We will ensure that your opinions are heard, and, if you wish, voiced anonymously on your behalf.
