On June 19, 1982, Vincent Chin, a Chinese American from a Detroit suburb, was violently murdered with a bat by two white men who mistook Chin for being Japanese. He died four days before his wedding on June 23. Both men were eventually cleared of all charges and served no jail time.

Outraged Asian Americans joined together to form the first pan-Asian movement that crossed ethnic lines to push for justice, and protest and rally against anti-Asian racism. This was the first time the term "Asian American" became a mainstream term that Asian Americans identified with.

Vincent Chin's legacy reminds us that anti-Asian violence still occurs today, as violence against Muslim, Sikh, South Asian, and Hmong Americans especially continue in our so-called "colorblind" society.

Please join us for a vigil to remember Vincent Chin and his legacy.
