As winter break is upon us, the reasons to go meatless this holiday season are abound!

Come to Foco tonight between 6 and 7:30pm to SIGN THE PLEDGE to go MEATLESS once a week this break!

WHY SHOULD YOU EAT LESS MEAT??

1. The Health factor

"A National Cancer Institute study of 500,000 people found that those who ate the most red meat daily were 30 percent more likely to die of any cause during a 10-year period than were those who ate the least amount of red meat." - MayoClinic

"Fatty red meats and many processed meats are high in saturated fat, which raises LDL (bad) cholesterol and increases risk of coronary heart disease." -Dr. Rachel K. Johnson, a spokesperson for the American Heart Association.

2. The Environment

"An estimated 1,800 to 2,500 gallons of water go into a single pound of beef. Tofu on the other hand, uses about 220 gallons per pound." -California Water Education Foundation

3. Animal Cruelty

"If every American cut out meat just once a week, about 1.4 billion animals could be spared each year." - United States Humane Society. Why do we do to cows and chickens what would be a felony to do to dogs and cats?

?4. Because everyone's doing it!

"A 2013 Public Policy Polling survey found that 13% of Americans identify as either vegetarian or vegan." Huge numbers of celebrities and public figures have been and are currently vegan. Many are not who you'd expect!

At Dartmouth, there are even more vegetarians and vegans than you might think. And the reasons are various! But at least part of it is because a little bit of research shows that our meat comes from places like this:
