George Ayittey is a distinguished economist in residence at American University and founder and president of the Free Africa Foundation. His areas of expertise include economic development, the World Bank, IMF, and democratization of Africa. He has championed the argument that "African countries are poor because they are not free"; that the primary cause of poverty in African countries is less a result of the oppression and mismanagement by colonial powers, but rather a result of modern oppressive native autocrats.?
