As I mentioned, our program is a National Institutes of Health-wide program that provides students at all levels the opportunity to participate in biomedical research for a 8-10 week period from June through August. This competitive program is centrally administered through the NIH Office of Education http://training.nih.gov/. All students are directed to fill out the application materials online through the website. Information about opportunities specifically at National Institute of Aging (NIA) can be viewed at the websites below.
Each year the NIA has had an energetic, enthusiastic, and talented group of summer interns who have been able to learn a great deal about biomedical research, aging and still have a good time. Our mentors and program staff play an integral role in making the program challenging and enjoyable. As you may know, the NIA is bi-located. All administrative functions and 10% (two laboratories) of the intramural scientific program are located on NIH’s main campus in Bethesda, and one laboratory is located in downtown Bethesda. The home of the intramural research program, the Biomedical Research Center, is located on the Johns Hopkins Bayview Campus in Baltimore.
Below are several links that provide information about training opportunities at NIA and NIH as well as about the portfolio of research within the NIA:

  1. NIH Training Website: http://www.training.nih.gov<http://www.training.nih.gov/> - The deadline for applying is March 1, 2013!
  2. Research being conducted at the NIA: http://www.grc.nia.nih.gov/offices.htm
  3. NIA Summer Program: http://www.grc.nia.nih.gov/students/summeropps.htm
  4. 2013 NIH Community College Summer Enrichment Program (https://www.training.nih.gov/ccsep_home_page

I hope this is enough information to get you started.
Please apply early, the placement process is very competitive, each year we received applications from numerous students with stellar academic records similar to yours. Also, let me know if you plan to apply specifically to the NIA, so that I can retrieve your application from the NIH database and place it in the NIA applicant pool for consideration.
I look forward to receiving your application

Minority Opportunities

I’m pleased to inform you that the NIH, NIDDK Office of Minority Health Research Coordination, is now accepting applications for the NIDDK/OMHRC Undergraduate Summer Internship Program (SIP). The on-line application is available on the OMHRC website http://SIP.niddk.nih.gov<http://sip.niddk.nih.gov/>. Deadline is February 15, 2013.

This program is specific to undergraduate students underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research, including African American, Hispanic American, Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiians, and
other Pacific Islanders. Successful applicants will join one of NIDDK’s research laboratories on the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland or Phoenix, Arizona for ten weeks beginning in June - August.
At the end of the summer, students participate in the NIH Summer Research Program Poster Day. This provides an opportunity for students to present their work before the NIH scientific community.
Students are also expected to participate in meetings and seminars in their individual laboratories.

Research performed covers an extraordinarily diverse area but is unified by a commitment to excellence in both basic and clinical investigation. This is an opportunity to gain experience in the use of

Emory University’s Office of Summer Programs is pleased to announce that MD-SEE, the MD Summer Experience at Emory, is now accepting applications for summer 2013.

Much more than a shadowing program, MD-SEE offers genuine clinical experience, classroom guidance on presentations, and a vigorous look at current issues and practices in medicine. This course will cover variable topics of special interest in the field of Clinical Neurology. Undergraduates will have an opportunity to correlate experience with actual patients with the science behind the diagnosis. During their time in the clinics, students will act as a “patient assistant,” helping patients who may have partial paralysis or loss of sensation. They will learn the basics of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and will record patients’ history and neurological findings while observing real-life patient examinations. Each student will be assigned a Clinical Neurology faculty mentor who will help develop the writing and poster projects. Publication of student work will be encouraged, co-authored by the faculty mentor.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students interested in medical school.

I'm pleased to announce that Families USA is accepting applications for the Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice. I have posted the fellowships on your online job board and a pdf of the application brochures is attached. When you meet with students or alumni interested in working toward social justice, especially in the realm of health care policy and advocacy, I hope you will tell them about this opportunity. I have pasted some background information about the fellowship below. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or if you would like hard copies of the application brochures.

The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice was created in 2005 by Philippe Villers, Founder and President of Families USA. Each year, the Villers Fellow works in our health policy department and assists our organization's efforts to improve access to health coverage for all Americans, especially for low-income and other vulnerable communities. Specifically, the Villers Fellow will conduct research on a range of health care policy issues, and write and contribute to publications that are relevant to health reform implementation and other health policy issues.
In creating the fellowship, Mr. Villers aspired to develop a network of young leaders who share a passion for health care justice. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to health care justice work following their year as a fellow. Additionally, in order to encourage the development of future leaders, Villers Fellows must commit to mentoring at least one person over the course of their careers.

The application deadline for the Villers Fellowship is January 25, 2013.

You can find more information, including a downloadable application form, on our
Web site: http://www.familiesusa.org/about/the-villers-fellowship.html
