Intergroup Dialogue W16

IGD will offer two dialogue groups this term:

Ability - Mondays @ 3-4:30pm

Size - Wednesdays @ 3-4:30pm

The Office of Pluralism and Leadership invites you to share your perspective and learn how others experience the world around them by participating in an Intergroup Dialogue program (IGD). In addition to meeting people from different backgrounds, IGD participants will have the opportunity to engage with fellow Dartmouth students in authentic conversations about challenging topics. Through story sharing, reflective prompts, and group collaboration, participants will explore issues of identity, diversity, and inequity at Dartmouth and beyond.

Each group will meet separately over the course of six weeks (week of Jan 25th - week of Feb 28th) for 1.5 hour sessions. Additionally, participants will be required to attend a four-hour retreat to get the conversation started, to establish the foundations for dialogue, and meet fellow group members and the facilitators.

Ability

What is Ableism?

Ableism are the practices and dominant attitudes in society that devalue and limit the potential of persons with disabilities. Ableism is a set of practices and beliefs that assign inferior value (worth) to people who have developmental, emotional, physical or psychiatric disabilities.

Ableism is used to describe effective discrimination against people with disabilities in favor of people who are not disabled. An ableist society is said to be one that treats non-disabled individuals as the standard of 'normal living', which results in public and private places and services, education, and social work that are built to serve 'standard' people, thereby inherently excluding those with various disabilities. Size

What is sizeism?

Sizeism or size discrimination is discrimination based on a person's size. Size discrimination usually refers to extremes in physical size, such as very tall or short; extremely thin or fat. As a general rule, sizeist attitudes imply that someone believes that a person's size is potentially superior to that of other people and treat people of other sizes negatively.

Fat people are discriminated against in all aspects of daily life, from employment to education to access to public accommodations, and even access to adequate medical care. This discrimination occurs despite evidence that 95 to 98 percent of diets fail over five years and that 65 million Americans are labeled "obese." Our thin-obsessed society firmly believes that fat people are at fault for their size and it is politically correct to stigmatize and ridicule them. Fat discrimination is one of the last publicly accepted discriminatory practices. (Source<http://dartmouth.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9ec49506dfffc6ed23309ced4&id=cd24e3c08b&e=e88e81a28e>)
