Like Barbara, we use BYU's WebCAPE and then do a follow-up when it seems
necessary: the borderline placements, or the student who had six years
in high school and got a 0 on the test... We're lucky to have a very
small student body, so the follow up is a face-to-face interview.

Anna and all:

We use the WebCAPE (BYU) placement tests for Spanish, German, French and
Russian (on line) and then ask the students to submit a brief writing
sample (in person). We have a mandate from our administration to make
all placement tests (especially for incoming freshlings) completely
online by next summer, so we are experimenting with using the BYU test
in conjunction with an online writing tool deployed or distributed via
Moodle.

Anyone else using Moodle for such tasks?
