>Subject: MLA 04 applied linguistics call

The Executive Committee of the Division for Applied Linguistics in
the MLA invites abstracts for our three sessions at the Philadelphia
convention in Dec. 2004:

1. Research on Internet-Mediated Foreign Language Study

The division invites original research reports on Internet-mediated
foreign language study. The research may represent diverse
theoretical approaches including (but not limited to) interactional
sociolinguistics, systemic functional linguistics, interactionist
SLA, sociocultural theory, and communication theory.

2. Research on Study Abroad

The division invites original research reports on any aspect of study
abroad in any foreign language. We encourage research reports from
diverse theoretical perspectives.

3. Policy Perspectives on Post-Secondary Foreign Language Requirements

The division invites research reports and position papers on how
institutional educational priorities (e.g., internationalization of
the curriculum) and budgetary constraints (e.g., increasing class
sizes, staffing patterns) affect perspectives and policies on the
foreign language requirement.

Please send abstracts of 400 words or less to Julie A. Belz
([log in to unmask]) by February 20, 2004.
