This morning's bird walk arranged by the Mascoma Chapter of New
Hampshire Audubon yielded 46 species. The 13 participants visited
Wilson's Landing in Hanover, NH, and then continued northward along
River Road from Hanover into Lyme and ended at Grant's Brook in Lyme.
Among the taxonomic families of birds, flycatchers were the winners in
terms of number of species on this morning's trip. Both Willow and
Alder Flycatchers were giving their characteristic vocalizations along
the Connecticut River. Other flycatchers included an Eastern Wood-
Pewee, an Eastern Phoebe, and at least 17 Eastern Kingbirds. Second
place among taxonomic families went to that of ducks, swans, and
geese, of which 4 species were seen: Canada Geese, Wood Ducks,
Mallards, and a Hooded Merganser. Swallows were represented by Bank,
Cliff, and Barn. all encountered at Wilson's Landing.
A flock containing dozens of Red-winged Blackbirds was characteristic
for the season. Warblers were sparse this morning. An agitated pair of
Common Yellowthroats carrying food surely had young nearby. Other
finds of interest this morning included Great Blue and Green Herons, a
Belted Kingfisher, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird in a patch of
jewelweed, a loudly singing Carolina Wren, a Veery, a singing Indigo
Bunting, singing Swamp Sparrows, and two Baltimore Orioles.
