Our grandson (age 12) called last night to tell us about some birds,
first just one, then several, that he witnessed burrowing out a hole
in the snow. From his description, the birds sounded like robins.
After discussing some other possibilities, we decided that is indeed
what it was. I had seen a robin on their property in Thetford the
day before and watched it eating frozen crab apples. Our son had
also seen a robin early that morning as he walked down the driveway
for the newspaper.
Has anyone ever observed robins doing this? I have seen Snow
Buntings dig themselves a cave in the snow. And I know bigger birds
such as grouse will do this, but I have never heard of robins doing
it before. It actually sounds like a very smart thing to do in sub-
zero weather!
