SAY "NO" TO PAPER OR PLASTIC AT SHAW'S

IN HONOR OF EARTH DAY: SHAW'S IS MAKING A DONATION TO NEW HAMPSHIRE AUDUBON WITH EVERY REUSABLE BAG

Concord, NH- When reusable bags are purchased in the month of April at a Shaw's and Star Market, customers are helping the environment in more ways than one. Shaw's will donate five cents to New Hampshire Audubon AND shoppers help to reduce the enviornmental footprint by reducing usage of plastic and paper bags with their reuseable bags.

"We believe that reusable bags are the better environmental option as compared to paper or plastic bags," said Shaw's President Larry Wahlstrom. "Last year, Shaw's significantly increased the awareness and sales of reusable bags by approximately 90%. We want to continue that tremendous success."

"We are delighted to partner with Shaw's," said Patricia Casey, Director of Organizational Development at New Hampshire Audubon. "Not only does this project raise awareness for reduction of our environmental footprint, but it also helps raise awareness and support for our organization's mission to protect New Hampshire's natural environment for wildlife and for people."

With every 99 cent Earth Day bag sold, five cents will be donated to Audubon Societies throughout New England including: Connecticut Audubon Society; Maine Audubon Society; Massachusetts Audubon Society; New Hampshire Audubon Society; Rhode Island Audubon Society; and Vermont Audubon Society.

The Earth Day bags will be sold at all Shaw's Supermarkets and Massachusetts Star Market locations from April 1 through April 30, 2009.

Other benefits that customers have discovered are that the reusable bags hold more groceries, which reduces the amount of trips from the car to the house, and the bags are sturdier for holding the heavy items such as cans.
