Imagine our surprise and delight when a Broad-winged Hawk entertained our cocktails on the deck hour last evening in downtown, residential Hanover. We first head its call over the din of conversation and then located it sitting in a spruce just twenty feet away. It hung around for a half hour until a resident family of blue jays could stand it no longer and, after calling in some crow reserves, chased it away.
