Did some multi-tasking this morning (fishing trip with my son/birding) at
Reed's Marsh in Orford. We canoed down river from the Orford Boat Launch
and explored the river side of Reed's Marsh. Highlights here included a
singing Marsh Wren and a Black-billed Cuckoo along the shoreline. Yesterday
morning I did my "Mountain Birdwatch" route on Moosilauke for VCE. This was
the latest into June I have done it in four years and I think it effected
the results. Rain and other factors prevented me from going up earlier in
June this year. I stayed overnight as I do in the Beaver Brook Shelter so
that I can start my route before dawn (I'm not as tough as Peg and Pip who
used to go up the Beaver Brook trail in the dark!) If you have ever hiked
that trail, you'll understand. My route is a bit higher up the mountain (I
think Bill S. did this route for a while). Conditions weren't great as it
was pretty windy. I had plenty of Blackpoll Warblers (15), five Swainson's
Thrushes, three each of Winter Wren and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers. No
Boreal Chickadees or Bicknell's Thrushes this year on my route, but I did
have one BITH calling from a "fir wave" near my route.
