VCE's 2017 field season, our 26th on the Mt. Mansfield ridgeline, began
last evening under cool, breezy conditions, with very wet trails underfoot.
Noel Dodge and I set 18 nets in the customary sites, capturing 7
individuals of the 3 resident thrush species by nightfall. The ridgeline
was eerily quiet until dusk, when Bicknell's Thrushes erupted in a brief
but intense volley of calls and songs.

We opened nets before dawn this morning, with temperatures hovering in the
high 30sF, a steady north wind, and low cloud cover. Again, vocal activity
was unusually low for early June. We managed to capture another 20 birds,
which surprised us considering how few visible or audible signs of avian
life were in evidence. No surprises either in or outside the nets, and we
closed up shop by 11 am, just as showers descended.

Our banding totals:

Bicknell's Thrush - 9 (2 new, 7 returns from previous years, including
males from 2013 and 2014)
Swainson's Thrush - 4 (1 new, 3 returns from previous years)
American Robin - 1 new male
Blackpoll Warbler - 6 (2 new and 2 return males, 1 new and 1 return female)
Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warbler - 4 (1 new and 1 return male, 2 new females
[one with an emerging brood patch])
White-throated Sparrow - 3 (2 new and 1 return males)

If the weather improves, we'll be back at it next week and should have a
more robust level of activity to report!

Chris
