As I was driving home today I spotted a small gull in the water by Ledyard
Bridge. It was off River Road near the parking areas where the big truck
trailers are parked. I knew right away it wasn't one of the typical Herring
or Ring-Billed gulls - the head was much smaller, and the body overall was
more delicate. I took a bunch of photos with my (apparently terrible)
phone, but most of them just look like a white blob. I went home and
grabbed my real camera, but the bird was gone by the time I got back. I'm
guessing it was a non-breeding Bonaparte's Gull, through the wings looks
lighter to me. Could have just been the sun though. It did have a dark spot
behind the eyes, but I wasn't close enough to really tell if it was a
smudge of color or a more defined dot. Keep an eye out if you're in the
area - I'd love to see if anyone else can definitively ID it!
