Yesterday, late morning, on sidewalk in front of DHMC's glass walls, a
Bohemian Waxwing. We picked it up and took it home for a burial more
dignified than institutional trash.
This offered opportunity to marvel close-up at the amazing intricacy of
this beautiful creature -- how the outstretched wing is accented with
individual flashes of purest yellow on the primaries, the Chinese red "wax"
actually 5-6 little "banners" of color at ends of white-tipped secondaries,
the sleek, subtly blended rust and gray tones of the body plumage and that
exotic-looking mask and crest -- all too amazing for words.
There were still crumbs of crab apple on it's beak. I feel both privileged
and saddened.
