There are a couple of good places to view Johnson Island from West Lebanon.
If you park behind the Golf and Ski Warehouse, you can walk out onto a
bluff that offers a pretty clear view of the island and upstream. A scope
is useful. This can sometimes be a great spot for waterfowl. If you park
behind Staples, you will find a trail that follows the river south. It can
be hard to find unobscured views of the island and the river, though. A
third spot is behind Appleby's, there is a clearing that looks out to the
island and river here. Something that may deter some (doesn't bother me
much); in warmer months these areas sometimes attract homeless people,
moreso along the less accessible areas. There has been someone living in a
tent this winter behind Kmart at the Two Rivers Conservation Area. This is
a very birdy place during migration, but unfortunately it has become very
overgrown in spots and is over-run with poison ivy.
