Grassland bird populations are in decline throughout the Upper Valley in both Vermont and New Hampshire.
This spring and summer the "Upper Valley Grassland Bird Conservation
Project"
will be mounting a major survey
project to study grassland bird populations and is seeking volunteers
to help People are needed to make stops along roadsides, looking
and
listening for selected grassland bird species, in both VT and NH.
The
surveys will be conducted from mid- May through early July, in the
mornings (5:30 - 9:30 am).
The information collected will help identify key grassland habitats in
the region. Results of this survey will be compared to results of a
survey taken in the late 1990s by Massachusetts Audubon and its partners
to show how changes in land use have affected the local grassland bird
community. In addition, next year willing landowners with key grassland
habitat will be
provided with management tools to improve the quality of their open
lands for grassland birds.
Help create more quality habitat for our grassland birds! For more
