If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference in sustainability at Dartmouth–and get paid for your time–this one’s for you! We’re hiring Sustainability Corps interns, Farm interns, a Willing Hands Film intern, and a Thrift Store intern for fall term!

(We promise it’s as fun as it looks!)

Sustainability interns have the opportunity to hone their design thinking and problem-solving skills, work on self-driven projects addressing key sustainability issues at Dartmouth, and join a cohort of dedicated, passionate fellow interns. We welcome applicants with a wide range of identities, interests and backgrounds - from activism to policy, from crunching numbers to running events. Applicants must be in Hanover for fall term and must have completed at least one academic year at Dartmouth.

Interns will work closely with their staff supervisor and co-interns, dedicating ~5-8 hours per week to their projects. In addition to their projects and weekly check-ins, interns will attend a 4-hour intern retreat and 3 intern dinners throughout fall term (all of which constitute paid time). Interns will be paid $16.25/hour. To apply, search for the posting on JobX.

Read on for specifics about each internship:

Sustainability Corps - Energy, Utilities, and Greenhouse Gases Intern

The Sustainability Corps seeks motivated, critical, analytical thinking students to manage multiple projects simultaneously to improve the operational performance of Dartmouth. Candidates should exhibit a balance of strong interpersonal, customer service skills to communicate and collaborate with Sustainability Office partners such as Facilities Operations & Management (FO&M), and strong critical and analytical skills to evaluate the data provided by the Office’s partners. We encourage students with all D-plans to apply; however, the Corps Program prefers students who will be on campus two consecutive terms. Responsibilities of Corps interns include:

  * Develop professionally-relevant skills in data management, analytics, and reporting; project management, teamwork, and collaboration; and creative thinking, problem solving, planning, and organization.
  * Expand knowledge and understanding of climate change, sustainability, and institutional operations.

  * Understand the energy, utility, and other relevant systems of Dartmouth College and their history, politics, and stakeholders
  * Collect data from the appropriate Dartmouth employees or databases; check data for quality, accuracy, and completeness
  * Analyze energy and utilities data using appropriate and efficient analytical tools
  * Produce reports detailing the College’s energy, utilities, and greenhouse gas consumption and production

  * Develop a decision tool to support the evaluation of Dartmouth's Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions
  * Evaluate one or more of the top priority Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions categories
  * Develop communication and data platform for Dartmouth's energy transition projects

Part-time Farm Interns

Farm interns help to keep things running at our Organic Farm, from day-to-day operations to programming for student engagement. Responsibilities of Farm Interns include:

  * Support fall farm operations including harvesting, weeding, irrigation, production field prep, greenhouse work, building upkeep, and beehive checks.
  * Help coordinate and lead volunteers participating in work days.
  * Share weekend greenhouse watering duties with team
  * Serve as a welcoming presence and resource to visitors to the farm when on-duty.
  * Maintain clean, organized, welcoming, beautiful, and accessible farm spaces and infrastructure.
  * Suggest and pilot programs, workshops, infrastructure changes, and events to increase and deepen student, faculty, and staff engagement with the farm. This may include social and academically oriented events.
  * Must be able to organize their own transportation to and from the farm for work (bike, carpool, Advance Transit, rollerblade, etc.).

Thrift Store Intern

The Free Market Thrift Store is committed to reducing clothing in Dartmouth’s waste stream and increasing access to (free!) clothing on campus so all students can have their needs met. Responsibilities of Thrift Store Interns include:

  *   Collecting clothing on campus
  * Keeping the thrift store organized and restocked
  * Sorting clothing out for various recovery streams
  * Communications about thrift store operations
  * Collaboration with other campus organizations to utilize thrift store resources and/or to coordinate volunteer sessions
  *   Waste reduction awareness education
  * Developing innovative programming or events using the thrift store space to enliven it and deepen sustainability community

Willing Hands Film Intern
The Sustainability Office is partnering with Willing Hands to create video media to complement Willing Hands’ forthcoming climate action plan. According to Project Drawdown, reducing food waste is one of the most impactful climate solutions. By putting good food to use rather than letting it–and all the energy that went into producing it–go to waste, Willing Hands' food recovery programs prevent the emission of about 1 million pounds of CO2 annually. We want to explain the connection between food waste and climate in tangible, easily understood terms, and to show how community members can be part of the solution via a series of short videos is the best medium to tell this story.

Deliverables

  * Two 30-40 second videos for social media (due Sept. 29 and Oct. 20)
  * One 3-minute video for web (due Nov. 17)

Parameters

  * Willing Hands has a deep well of b-roll for the student to draw from. A small amount of additional filming will be required. We do not have video equipment to provide but can work with Jones Media Center to procure necessary equipment.
  * This intern will be supervised collaboratively by the Sustainability Office and Willing Hands Staff.
  * Student will submit progress to Sustainability Office supervisor via weekly check-ins.
  * Work must be maintained in a shared folder.
  * Transportation to the Willing Hands facility (198 Church Street, Norwich) will be required; biking, running, walking, taking Advance Transit part of the way, and driving are all options. If this presents a potential barrier for you, please let us know and we will do our best to work with you!
  * This internship will be compensated via commission for a total of $500 upon successful delivery of the desired videos outlined above (as opposed to hourly wages).
