OK, I wasn't clear enough; sorry about that.
What I meant is that (I believe) any folder can be accessed by typing into
the Go to Folder window. So you should be able to type in ~/Applications if
you have an Applications folder in your home folder. Then, as Rich
indicates, you would be able to drag that folder to the Finder sidebar for
permanent access.
