This is a list of finder objects. Which makes sense inside of a
Finder tell block.
if you had said
tell application "Finder"
set fileList to every file of tiffFolder as alias list
end tell
you would have received.
{alias "prepress:Hold for V30:12266_Aviator:12266_Aviator.psG01.TIF",
alias"prepress:Hold for V30:12266_Aviator:12266_Aviator.psG01.TIF"}
which compiles.
