 The Language and Culture Learning Center at the University of Illinois at
Chicago has an opening for a Digital Humanities Postdoc.

The Center works with instructors in UIC's School of Literatures, Cultural
Studies and Linguistics to identify and integrate appropriate technologies
into their teaching. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in one of the following:
Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish,
Russian, Spanish, or a related field, and college-level teaching experience
in at least one of these languages.

Description:

We seek a creative and organized postdoctoral research associate whose
research project and tech skills will mesh with the missions of the
Language and Culture Learning Center: helping faculty find and integrate
technology into foreign language, literature, and culture classes and
supporting them in this process, and training foreign language peer tutors.
We welcome applications from energetic and focused scholars whose past
experience and planned research projects engage with teaching with
technology and with peer tutoring in the fields of foreign language,
literature, and culture.
Duties:

*Teaching and Curriculum Development: *

·         Collaborate with the Director of the LCLC on teaching and
curriculum development for the departments in the School of Literatures,
Cultural Studies and Linguistics (LCSL).

·         Collaborate with Director to co-teach LCSL 505 or LCSL 391.

   1. LCSL 505 is a graduate course on the theory and practice of teaching
   with technology. This course is taught every Fall and in Spring semester
   and is central to the professional development of 150 teaching assistants
   and lecturers in 4 different departments.
   2. LCSL 391 is an undergraduate internship course: peer mentoring for
   foreign language students in the LCSL Basic Language Programs. This course
   will be taught each semester and is the basis for the new Peer Tutoring
   aspect of the LCLC.  These undergraduate peer tutors will eventually serve
   students taking all 14 languages taught in LCSL, and will help prepare the
   tutors for the job market.

·         Develop and lead department-specific and general workshops on
learning and teaching with technology during the Fall and Spring semesters
as well as during the graduate teaching assistant, lecturer, and faculty
orientations. Sample workshops include:  Developing advanced speaking
skills with VoiceThread; Collaborative learning tasks with Wikis; Video
blogs; Online grade books; Online tools for collaborative research; How to
create and teach blended classes.

·         Collaborate on the development and ongoing revisions of blended
learning curricula for 3000 students in six departments.  The LCLC is the
central resource and expert within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
for the development and implementation of multi-level blended learning
curricula in foreign language education.



*Research and analysis on LCLC and LCSL projects: *

·         Conduct empirical research in collaboration with the Director of
the Center and faculty from foreign language departments to assess the
effectiveness of teaching and learning materials.

·         Identify and evaluate emerging technologies to enhance learning
of the fourteen different languages taught at UIC.

·         Develop sample materials and summarize (report or PowerPoint)
advantages for learning and teaching.

·         Research the use of software and report to departments how
software applications can address UIC- or language-specific learner needs.

·         Collaborate with other centers at UIC and internationally on the
development and dissemination of computer-mediated learning modules and on
best practices for peer tutoring.

·         Identify grants and collaborate in the writing of grant
applications.

·         Present and/or participate in local and national conferences
about technology in foreign language acquisition and/or about peer tutoring.



*Development and Implementation:*

·         Meet with faculty one-on-one for the development and
implementation of computer-mediated materials.

·         Meet with faculty to help set up and maintain peer tutoring.

·         Assist the implementation of computer-mediated learning modules
in individual classes.

·         Develop self-help online tutorials for specific software or
materials.

·         Develop website and materials for Peer Tutoring.

·         Lead (with LCLC Director) recruiting events for LCSL at
university-wide and LAS recruiting and yield events, e.g. UIC Ignite, LAS
Involvement Fair. Demonstrate how LCSL classes use technology and peer
tutoring to incoming and continuing students.



*Supervision: *

·         Collaborate with Director in training 3-4 graduate student
research assistants (RAs).

·         Collaborate with Director in training 6-15 undergraduate peer
tutors.

·         Supervise weekly work schedules and tasks of RAs and peer tutors.

·         Maintain a research assistant development program to effectively
run day-to-day Center tasks and complete special technology-based projects.

·         Collaborate with Director to review the work of research
assistants to ensure Center objectives are met.

·         Collaborate with Director to review the work of peer tutors.



*Administrative tasks: *

·         Oversee scheduling of weekly student events held in the LCLC
(conversation hours, film series, book clubs, language clubs, special
events, peer tutoring). Collaborate with Director on organization of
regularly rotating national conferences sponsored by the LCLC (upcoming:
Chicago Language Symposium, 2019; Chicago Colloquium on Digital Humanities
and Computer Science, 2021).

·         Maintain LCLC website (WordPress) and Peer Tutoring site (Google
site).

·         In consultation with the LCLC director, purchase hardware and
software to maintain and upgrade all work stations and equipment.

·         Oversee maintenance, inventory, all LCLC equipment.

·         With LCLC Director, carry out the hiring of research assistants.

·         Maintain help-desk ticketing system.

·         Oversee creation of weekly e-newsletter announcing workshops,
talks, and cultural events for language students and teaching tips and
events for instructors.
Qualifications:

*Requirements:*

·         Ph.D. in one of the following: Arabic, Chinese, French, German,
Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, or a related field,
and college-level teaching experience in at least one of these languages.
Experience with language-teaching administration, e.g. language center or
language program coordination.

Strong tech skills and demonstrated experience with instructional and
classroom technologies, including but not limited to: LMS (e.g.
Blackboard), Microsoft Office, Google Apps (docs, sheets, sites), webpage
design and maintenance (e.g. WordPress), lecture capture systems, smart
boards, web conference tools, Adobe Creative Suite, web technologies,
social media tools, some experience with HTML desirable.



*Preferred:*

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
