A quick workaround-type answer that they can use right now:
 
On PCs, right-click the audio link. A drop-down menu will appear. Hover the
cursor over Open With. If Audacity is installed, it will appear as one of the
possible selections in Open With. The student clicks on Audacity, and the audio
file opens in Audacity.
