This Wikipedia entry on SECAM (and MESECAM) is one of the clearest and most informative explanations (of anything) that I have seen on that site. It is worth a look, if only for historical reasons.

Speaking of multi-standard VCRs, I liked the previous mention of the Panasonic AG-W1. That sturdy workhorse will go down in language technology history right next to the Wollensak T1500 :-).
