I did a search on <http://www.hotbot.com> -- my favorite search engine --
for "English Word Frequency" and came up with a lot of stuff. Of all the
suggestions, I'd suggest starting at:

which lists many books and web sites that provide the lists themselves as
well as how they were generated, and how one might use such lists.
