Assistant Professor of Hispanic Linguistics and Director of Language Programs

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a specialization in Spanish second language acquisition to direct the Spanish and Portuguese language programs and teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Appointment will be 100% time over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May), beginning fall semester 2014 (08/25/2014). This is a probationary (tenure-track) faculty appointment at the rank of assistant professor leading to the possible conferral of indefinite tenure. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to pursue a rigorous program of research, and teach and advise graduate and undergraduate students. A Ph.D. or foreign equivalent is required by the time of appointment.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Spanish second language acquisition or related field by time of appointment. Candidates must show evidence of scholarly excellence and teaching effectiveness. Native or near-native abilities in both Spanish and English are required. Excellent administrative and interpersonal skills are necessary, as is expertise in technology-enhanced language teaching. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in language program administration and/or curriculum development and assessment. Proficiency in Portuguese is a plus.

Duties/Responsibilities: The Director of Language Programs will be expected to pursue a rigorous program of research and publications; teach two undergraduate/graduate courses per year; direct the Spanish and Portuguese language programs, develop standards-based curriculum, train and supervise graduate students/instructors; provide service to the unit, university and profession as appropriate to rank. Involvement in college- and institutional-level initiatives related to foreign languages and second language acquisition is expected.
