Experiencing ReLANpro Cloud language learning at IALLT 2013

ReLANpro has been working hard to present accurate data to its clients and potential new users. We wanted to make sure the ReLANpro Cloud learning experience would be beneficial to both teachers and students. At IALLT 2013 in Florida, Dr. Duncan Charters will present Principia College's findings. Principia College closed their previous language lab a year ago and replaced it with ReLANpro.NET<http://ReLANpro.NET>.

We would like to invite you to Dr. Charters' presentation, Friday, June 14th at 10:45AM.
Location: Pine Crest, Ft. Lauderdale, US-202 Hall.

The next step: A cloud technology virtual language lab

Abstract:
Can cloud technology replace the traditional language lab? A decision to convert Principia College's Language Center into a 21st Century Technology classroom available to the whole campus led to the virtual replacement encouraged by the administration. Students now do "lab" work anywhere and anytime through ReLANpro .NET and the mobile language lab system. The session focuses on what was lost and what was gained in the transition. There will be a demonstration of the range of assignments created for the system. Can the adoption of this approach result in greater use by students and therefore support more effective learning?

Description:
After a brief description of the presenter's experience in directing transitions in technology and pedagogy in language labs, from reel-to-reel to cassette to hardware-software then all-software systems, the session will report on the first year of the transition to a virtual "lab" experience. Questions and comments on the decision and the response of Principia College's Languages and Cultures Department will be invited both during and after the presentation.

Participants will be given a full description of the types of assignments created for language classes using the system, and will have the opportunity to experience a number of these directly. The presenter will report on a study of student response to the change. There will be a comparative analysis of the time students spent using the new system compared to the old, and whether all students were equally motivated to use it more because of its instant availability from anywhere at any time. The presenter will contrast the relative effectiveness of the previous and current ReLANpro systems in supporting the Department's goals and outcomes for increasingly proficiency-oriented language classes.

The presentation will attempt to answer these questions: Can cloud technology provide a true "language lab" experience to programs which have never had a physical language lab? How much is lost by not having a supported, dedicated space for both classroom lab practice and individual study, and how much is gained by round-the-clock access to the system for all students from personally owned computers and mobile devices?

A written history of Principia's language lab experience will be distributed to participants, along with examples of types of assignments, practice, and testing that have proved effective under the new system.

Until next time for ReLANpro...

Ralf Porankiewicz, President
