from [log in to unmask] Colleagues, I am writing to share with you a new non commercial, free site that uses authentic images to help teach language & culture. Pictolang! http://www.pictolang.com/<https://mail.washjeff.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=a3f63a12aeda4cb0871934d9cae1bff3&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.pictolang.com%2f> It features a visual word trainer (flashcards) utilizing some research on cognitive psychology, memory training and a few image / word / culture games. The site is based on the CAPL collection so the depth of the games is dependent on the collection. Many of the programs will also work with static URLs for easy integration into syllabi: For example: For the elementary learner, it may be best for some of the easier categories like Fruits http://www.pictolang.com/flashcards.php?langID=1&catID=2&subCatID=16<https://mail.washjeff.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=a3f63a12aeda4cb0871934d9cae1bff3&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.pictolang.com%2fflashcards.php%3flangID%3d1%26catID%3d2%26subCatID%3d16> or Veggies: http://www.pictolang.com/flashcards.php?langID=1&catID=2&subCatID=17<https://mail.washjeff.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=a3f63a12aeda4cb0871934d9cae1bff3&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.pictolang.com%2fflashcards.php%3flangID%3d1%26catID%3d2%26subCatID%3d17> but there are a number of options out there. In making it web based it should work on (almost) all devices, some having better viewing capability that others. In any event, enjoy and comments or concerns can be sent to me at [log in to unmask] or posted publicly at www.facebook.com/pictolang It is the first version of a site meant to use *authentic* images to help with language acquisition based on a self-generating software architecture, so there may be a few technical hiccups. Mostly my main criticism is based on the content, but I am open to suggestions from the CALL community for the beta test.
