We're planning a new language lab and seem to be coming to the conclusion
that we can do almost everything we want to do within a Web-CT shell.
Since we have extensive experience with and support for Web-CT on campus,
this seems to be a logical way to go. Many of the "lab" exercises,
therefore, will be available to students on line so they won't have to
visit the physical space designated the "language lab." This means that
this room will be devoted to those teaching and learning activities which
require the students to be together in one space, with access to computers
and to the teacher and/or each other.
With regard to Web-CT: our faculty love it. It is used both to support
on-campus classes and distance education classes. It does require a fair
bit of training and support for faculty to use it well, but its benefits in
terms of course management, information exchange, testing, etc. have proven
well worth the effort involved in "getting a course onto the Web." We
would be very interested in collaborating with other universities in
developing course materials for use in Web-CT (or any other web-based
system). We plan to use digital audio (playback and recording, probably
using software like Divace), digital video, as well as the usual reading
and writing exercises, multiple choice tests, etc. Sharing the work and
the products makes a lot of sense.
By the way, the French department uses Web-CT in some of its courses and is
very pleased with the results. Reportedly, for introductory or
intermediate courses, the ability to shift practice and drilling of
grammar, etc. out of the classroom and onto the Web frees up classroom time
for more student-to-teacher and student-to-student interaction and for more
attention to culture and history. This makes for a richer learning
experience which providing students with ready access to the tools they
need for interactive practice of "the basics."
Our language departments include French, Spanish, German, and Russian. In
addition, our Music Department will make use of the lab to instruct its
students in singing in a foreign language. Any one know of anyone else
whose lab includes music students?
