In this webinar, Nelleke Van Deusen-Scholl will discuss a model for sharing less commonly taught languages, currently piloted among Yale, Cornell, and Columbia universities with support from the Mellon Foundation. This project uses a live HD videoconferencing environment to connect language classrooms in the less commonly taught languages at participating institutions (offering 8 languages for credit this fall, including Bengali, Romanian, Zulu, Yoruba, and Classical Tibetan). Angela Gleason will discuss the directed independent language study (DILS) program and Yale's DILS distance model, supported by the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation, in which students are connected through Skype or videoconferencing with language partners. Yale is offering a total of 11 distance languages this fall in this non-credit program, including Amharic, Bemba, Guaraní, Lakota, and Norwegian.
