>Subject: printer suggestions
Can anyone suggest a network printer model? We are adding a new
student computer lab (Intel Macintosh computers). I would like to
purchase an ethernet-ready duplexing monochrome laser printer. Printing
needs are moderate for a student lab, probably around 2000 pages per
month.
We have a mid-range Samsung and a Brother that claim to print at 20-25
pages per minute. That printing speed is good for us. When they are
working, they meet our needs. They are a bit finicky, however, and
seem to take themselves off line too frequently. The printing software
is less flexible and harder to use than the HPs. In contrast, our old
HP 4050N gives very little trouble, but it is a bit slow. Our HP 8000
also works well for us, although it is bigger and noisier than optimum.
Current HP monochrome offerings seem less robust and surprisingly
expensive. Several of the network color lasers cost substantially less
than the network monochrome lasers. A refurbished HP 8150 would cost
over $1000, from the sources that I have found. I like the 8000
series, but I'm not sure that price makes sense for an older printer.
I welcome any suggestions for printer models and vendors. If you wish
to contact me directly, I will summarize to the list.
Thanks,
Derek
